Spring playoffs begin, end
By VALERIE DETWILER/The Valley Chronicle
Tahquitz High School's boys' volleyball team has accomplished it they set out to do at the beginning of the season: It qualified to go to California Interscholastic Scholarship playoffs in its inaugural year as a freelance school.
The team, made up of only freshman and sophomores, had to win at least half of its games to even have a shot at competing in postseason play.
The Titans managed this even though they had tough competition, such as West Valley High School, which placed first in the Sunbelt League, and Hemet High School, which placed second in the Sunbelt League.
The young Titans will have a David-and-Goliath-style challenge standing in front of them when they face Arrowhead Christian today.
The Titans will travel to Arrowhead to take on the first-place team at 7 p.m.
West Valley and Hemet are also headed to playoffs in boys' volleyball.
The Mustangs will have home court advantage when they take on El Modena High School of Orange at 7 p.m. today at West Valley.
El Modena was the third-place finisher in the Century League.
Hemet will travel to Arnold Beckman High School of Irvine, which placed second in the Pacific Coast League, for a 7 p.m. game today.
In other playoff news, Hemet's boys' tennis team won its wild-card-round playoff game Tuesday against Burroughs High School of Ridgecrest, 11-7, to send them to the first round of CIF playoffs.
Hemet traveled to Colony High School of Ontario, the first-place finisher in the Mt. Baldy League, for a 3 p.m. match. Results were not in by press time.
San Jacinto High School's boys' tennis team hosted Covina High School of Covina on Thursday for its first round of CIF play. The Tigers finished second in the Mountain Pass League.
Baseball and softball playoffs begin today, but seeding was not available at press time.
