How smaller dealerships are more successful

■ By Richard Perry / Contributed File PhotoRichard Perry. Greetings from The Hemet Car Guy, As a member of our Regional Hemet/San Jacinto Chamber of Commerce, I pay close attention to the monthly add and drop list of the membership. When I drive down Florida Avenue and some of our other commercial streets I see the empty buildings and remember the businesses that were once there. I get it – I know it is difficult, whether you run a business or a non-profit, that there are challenges, regulations, lack of employees, lack of customers and even some people who just simply don’t want you to succeed, so businesses aren’t successful or (more…)

Fear and loathing on the car-shopping trail
New cars; you love ‘em but you hate ‘em Covert Chrysler Dodge Jeep RamThere’s nothing like a Dodge Ram truck ad to make you want to buy a new vehicle. ■ By Chris Smith / Advisory Editor There is nothing like a new car. If I do, I don’t want anyone to know about it. A friend of mine is always paying too much for his cars. He is the perfect customer for auto dealers. He pays too (more…)

Why the Caddy is Presidential

Why the Caddy is Presidential
Wikimedia Commons2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine. ■ By Richard Perry / Contributed Greetings from the Hemet Car Guy, Some time ago, after President Trump was elected and first took office, I wrote about his hand-me-down Presidential Limo, called “The Beast.” The Beast was actually very old. I guess our Government and the Secret Service thought an upgrade was in order. The most recent presidential limousine fleet debuted on Barack Obama’s 2009 Inauguration Day. Since then, many have been expecting the newest fleet that will transport Trump around, which his predecessor described as “a Caddy, basically on a tank frame.” Last fall, the newest presidential limousine was photographed and seen on public roads (more…)

What to invest in: Uber vs personal transportation

What to invest in: Uber vs personal transportation
File PhotoRichard Perry. ■ By Richard Perry / Contributed Greetings from the Hemet Car Guy. My Uber app is a convenient transportation option for when I need a ride to the auto auction where I know I’ll be buying at least one vehicle that I can drive back. Also as I’ve stated before in my previous articles, I’ve used the service to pick up my youngest daughter from high school. Thankfully she just graduated and is now driving herself which is great news for me because it was all adding up. It turns out the app was not the most cost-efficient replacement for a vehicle. Maybe it’s a good option for (more…)

What to know when changing vehicle ownership

What to know when changing vehicle ownership
File PhotoRichard Perry. ■ By Richard Perry / Contributed Greetings from the Hemet Car Guy. Recently, my father-in-law Bob has fallen terminally ill due to his fight with cancer. Bob, former director of Patton State Hospital and director of mental health for many counties in California, is the patriarch of our large family and a very smart man. He has always been conscious of his need to prepare for what’s ahead even for the unexpected. Bob told me he wanted me to sell his motorhome, and wanted to give his Jeep to my sister-in-law. It was easier for Nicci to change ownership because there was no lienholder and the transfer was (more…)

Tips for choosing all-terrain or off-road tires
StatePoint MediaWhat tires should you invest in for a little or a lot of off-roading? ■ StatePoint Media / Contributed Love driving off-road? Before heading out for the great wide open, be sure your vehicle is equipped with the right set of tires. Big. Wide. Knobby. Some believe this is all you need to look for in an all-terrain or an off-road tire. But there’s much more to quality all-terrain and off-road tires than meets the eye. To choose the proper tire for your adventures off the beaten path, the first question to ask yourself is, “How much on-road driving will I be doing?” This is a critically important question because (more…)

Why I love the new Chevy Impala

Photo FIleRichard Perry. ■ By Richard Perry / Contributed Greetings from the Hemet Car Guy. I’ve always said that I am interested in what’s new and what the reviews say. Not that I recommend buying new – my interest lies in knowing more about the vehicle and whether it is a good value, no matter how old. While reading the 10 best list, I came across the 2018 Chevrolet Impala. The Impala may date back to 1958, but today’s Impala features high-tech infotainment like onboard Wi-Fi, Apple Carplay, and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth audio, and navigation. Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system is one of the best. I still remember the V8-powered Impalas (more…)

Vehicle responsibility: from emergency kits to military

Photo FIleRichard Perry. ■ By Richard Perry / Contributed Greetings from the Hemet Car Guy. A couple weeks ago in our article “It’s just easier to call Dad” I shared how to jump start a car. Then I vowed that I would get all our kids a roadside kit. After that, I received a call at the dealership from a Chronicle reader asking “What would I recommend in a roadside kit? Well here you go: an emergency kit, at the bare minimum, should contain blankets, canned goods, water, first-aid kit, flashlights, and jumper cables. Some of our customers of VIP Autos are in the military or have children that serve proudly (more…)
