Two Hemet women killed in rollover collision on Domenigoni Parkway and Winchester Road

Two Hemet women were killed and five others were injured in what officials called a “mass casualty event” near Domenigoni Parkway and Winchester Road in the unincorporated area of Winchester Dec. 23.
Emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene of the four vehicle, rollover collision about 9:51 a.m. The wreck caused 18 firefighters from three engine companies, a hazardous materials team and one truck company to respond, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department’s spokeswoman April Newman.
Three victims were trapped inside their vehicles and rescuers used the Jaws of Life to extricate them.
Elizabeth Vera, 31, and Joan Hoffenberg, 61, both of Hemet, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Riverside County Coroner’s Office release. Both women were driving separate vehicles.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of a Nissan Titan pickup truck was driving north on Highway 79 and failed to negotiate the turn, striking a 1995 Chevy Blazer and a 1995 Honda Accord.
The roadway was closed for about two hours before it was reopened to through traffic.
California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the fatal collision.
