Supervisor John J. Benoit Dies Following Pancreatic Cancer Battle

John J. Benoit, Riverside County Fourth District supervisor, passed away peacefully Dec. 26 at his home in Bermuda Dunes. He was 64.
Benoit battled advanced pancreatic cancer since being diagnosed in November and continued to perform his duties on a reduced workload. He is survived by his wife, Sheryl; son, Ben (wife Jaimie); daughter, Sarah; brothers Mark and Paul; and grandchildren Abrielle and Nick.
Benoit served as Riverside County Fourth District supervisor from 2009 to 2016. He was chairman of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in 2013 and 2016.
A veteran of 31 years in law enforcement, Benoit started his career with the Corona Police Department. He attended the FBI National Academy and rose through the ranks of the California Highway Patrol to become commander of its Indio Station. After retiring from the Highway Patrol, Coachella Valley residents elected Benoit to represent them in the State Legislature.
He was successful in having 40 pieces of legislation signed into law, including the landmark “Aryanna’s Law” to protect children in daycare centers. He was honored as “Legislator of the Year” by the California School Boards Association, the California Narcotics Officers’ Association and the Chief Probation Officers of California.
Plans for funeral services will be forthcoming.
