Losing to a good team is always tough on an equally good team. But the chance to get your own back on them can be absolutely divine. West Valley High’s varsity soccer girls had that chance on Tuesday, Jan. 3 as the Hillcrest Trojans came to play. Last time the two teams met in early December, Hillcrest rode the Lady Mustangs 2-0. But the winds of change blew this time around. And it was cold outside.
Angelica Benitez scored the first goal for the Mustangs in just 10 minutes, followed by Kamryn O’Brien five minutes later. But the Trojans wouldn’t go down without a fight, and managed a goal of their own with five minutes still in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs were looking to keep the Trojans out of their goal. And keep them out, they did… as the Trojan girls did the same. There were several missed opportunities on both sides of the field. For the Mustangs, there were several very close calls. And a last minute attempt on Hillcrest’s goal just bounced off the top of the goal. But in the end, 2-1 was all West Valley needed to finally beat the Trojans.
Coach Daniel Ortega was happy when it was all over: “It was definitely a hard-earned victory, but Hillcrest is a tough team. They had us all the way to the end.”

So what can the Banning Broncos expect when they take to Mustang Canyon this afternoon? “We’re just gonna come out and play our style,” says Ortega.
West Valley had better, as they have room to improve on their 4-6-1 record. They can learn a lot from the 8-6-1 team they just bested…
