California’s sales tax rate to decrease in January 2017

A■ Mary Ann Morris / Editor portion of Proposition 30, the Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012, is sunsetting, and with it goes one quarter of one percent (0.25%) in sales tax. The current rate of sales tax for Riverside County is now 7.75 percent. The decrease in the statewide rate is effective for all cities and counties in California. On April 1, however, the sales and use tax for Hemet city residents will increase by 1 percent with the passage and implementation of Measure U, to 8.75 percent. Proposition 30 was a temporary tax passed by 55 percent of California voters at the statewide election on Nov.
