The Historic Hemet Theatre six-concert sellout streak came to an end on Saturday night – with a disappointing turnout for the tribute to The Doobie Brothers. But there was nothing disappointing about the evening’s performance by San Fernando Valley-based China Grove.
The 400-seat auditorium was only about half-full, but the fans who were there more than made up for it with their enthusiasm. The dance floor filled over and over again, the music so compelling it was difficult to stay seated. China Grove proved its reputation as the best reproduction of the classic Doobie Brothers’ sound and style.
The show is often referred to as “America’s Soundtrack,” and this audience definitely knew the score. Hit after hit, the crowd sang along.
As usual, several newcomers received their first taste of the dynamic performing arts center and, as usual, they vowed to be back to experience the charming ambience, great acoustics, top-notch bands and the warm, appreciative audience.
Tribute to The Doobie Brothers was the last concert in the HHT Winter/Spring Concert Series. The new Summer/Fall series begins with a Tribute to Fleetwood Mac on Saturday, June 17.
