Hemet High Girls Volleyball team shuts out the Mustangs at West Valley, 3-0
■ Corey Evan / Sports Reporter
One need not travel outside the valley for a little fun. As the West Valley High School Lady Mustangs’ volleyball team and the visiting Lady Bulldogs of Hemet High proved last Thursday, fun is right in your own backyard! Fans of both teams filled both sides of the Mustangs’ gym as this match got going.
The Bulldogs got fans barking as they took the first three points of the first set, and kept the Mustangs far behind them on the scoreboard. The Mustangs tried to come back, but it was too little, too late: Hemet took set one 25-11.
In set two, the Mustangs experienced a little deja vu, as the Bulldogs took in six points before the home team got one. By now, it was obvious the visiting team was on form today. The Lady Mustangs did improve a little in this set, only losing 25-16.
In set three, the Mustangs experienced a little more deja vu, but this time the Bulldogs only took the first two points of the set before the home team. Fans on both sides of the court put their team spirit on display during this set, as the Bulldogs continued their winning ways. They would take this set 25-15 to shut out the Mustangs.
As his Lady Mustangs licked their proverbial wounds, Coach Shawn Pulsipher acknowledged their worthy opponents: “We got outplayed; I’m not going to take anything away from Hemet High, they’re a better team and the better team won today. Their record shows and they flat-out outplayed us.”
But despite today’s loss, one Lady Mustang had reason to celebrate: Setter Madison Hubbell turned sweet 16 that day! Even a losing game can’t put a damper on that fun. On behalf of the Valley Chronicle, Happy Birthday Madison!
Hopefully the Mustangs can achieve a third place result in league this afternoon, as they take on the San Jacinto Tigers in their own Mustang Gym. As you may have already read, the Hemet Bulldogs already milked the Tigers two weeks ago. Maybe the Mustangs can do the same!
Match Summary: Bulldogs def. Mustangs 25-11, 25-16, 25-15.
