Crowds came out to meet and share a photo-op with Idyllwild’s unique mayor on Feb. 10 at the Idyllwild Library. Mayor Max, whose full name is Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller, II, is a golden retriever and has served as the mayor of the unincorporated town since 2014.
Max’s predecessor, Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller, was elected in an effort to raise funds for Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends (ARF), a non-profit 501(c)(3).
Residents were able to cast their votes in June 2012 for a $1 donation. Max beat out 16 other nominees, including 14 dogs and two cats with two-thirds of the vote. The election raised $31,000 in proceeds to benefit ARF.
Originally, Max was only going to serve one year, but the community pushed for two. Max served as mayor from his election in June 2012 to April 2, 2013, when he passed away.
Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II took over as mayor and was grandfathered in on July 21, 2013. The community decided to make Max their mayor for life.
The current Mayor Max serves with his two deputy mayors, Mikey Mighty-Dog Mueller and Mitzi Marie Mueller.
During his tour Feb. 10, some residents caught the mayor taking a well-deserved snooze between the ebb and flow of fans. Max might be the only mayor on the planet that can get away with such a thing. Fans received calendars and magnets of the mayor and his two deputy mayors, who also have a chief of staff, Phyllis Mueller.
Max represents the communities of Idyllwild, Pine Cove, Fern Valley, and Mountain Center.
Mayor Max is tasked with promoting the community, supporting commissioners in their projects, striving to be present at community events, such as outdoor concerts, festivals, fairs, and the July 4 parade. He also does his best to attend ribbon cuttings, mixers and speaks out on behalf of the animals of this mountain, domesticated and non-domesticated.
