Supporters of the Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District turned out during the weekend of March 17-18 for what has become known as, “The Weekend”—the annual two-day fundraiser for special projects and needs the district has such as pool, athletic, and infrastructure equipment.
Some 150 golfers showed up for the Friday golf tournament and auction at the Soboba Springs Country Club, and about three hundred attended the dinner and auction the following evening at the Valley-Wide Recreation Center.

Golfers gather after play at the Soboba Springs Country Club to bid on auction items donated by local businesses as part of The Weekend fundraiser to support Valley-Wide Regional Park.

Dean Wetter, general manager of Valley-Wide Regional Park, and Exchange Club member Tom Wilson paused during the golfing auction to familiarize Valley Chronicle readers with the history of the event, sponsored by the Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation, Hemet-San Jacinto Exchange Club, and Kiwanis Club of Hemet, among others.
“Our sponsors have donated some great prizes, so we know everyone will have fun,” Wetter said the day before the main auction. He reported later The Weekend raised thousands that will be used to help the park district.
Golfers tipped their collective hats one more time to the late Jim Venable, former Hemet city councilman, Riverside County supervisor, and Exchange Club member who conceived the fundraiser 28 years ago at Echo Hills Golf Course. Venable died in 2016 on March 17, the date commemorated by The Weekend’s opening golf tournament.
