The majority of high school graduates never come back to their school to visit after graduation. Some, on the other hand, end up working at their high school. West Valley High School’s activities assistant, Timm Hannem, is one of the latter who first attended the school before coming back to earn his living.
Hannem was selected for the March 2018 Recognition of Excellence Award by Hemet Unified School District governing board president, Ross Valenzuela. “Tim Hannem was selected as the March School Board recipient for his dedication and perseverance in working with our West Valley High School students in their Academic Decathlon and other related activities on his own personal time while being an employee of our district!”
Hannem certainly didn’t see this award coming. “It’s a huge honor to be recognized by the governing board; There’s so many people who work so hard in this district, so I’m incredibly blessed to be recognized by them,” he said.
After graduating in 2003, Hannem says he made his way back to West Valley by giving his time there. “I just started volunteering with the school, actually,” he continued. “I started working for the district as a substitute teacher about ten years ago. They needed more help with chaperoning dances and organized events such as graduation, So I started volunteering. When the position opened up, I applied for it and I have loved my job every day since then.”
Despite being unmarried and having no children himself, Hannem has family attending school in Hemet. His nephew attends Fruitvale. “Not only have I gone through Hemet Unified, but my family has gone through Hemet Unified. I’m going to watch the next generation get the same level of educational excellence.”
Hannem would like to thank John Bradshaw, Billy Valenzuela, Dr. Alex Ballard and all his former teachers at West Valley for their influence in his career. On behalf of The Valley Chronicle, congratulations Mr. Hannem!
