Kayla Castro leaves behind a 1-year-old son as family raises money for funeral
■ Chronicle News Staff
A young San Jacinto mother who had returned to college in an effort to better her life was killed last week when she lost control of her car on the Ramona Expressway and plowed head-on into another vehicle, according to news reports.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, April 18, after Kayla Castro reportedly was speeding toward an area hospital where her brother, Juan, was recovering from a separate vehicle crash in which he had been involved earlier, according to the family.
Police said the location of the crash was near Lakeview Hot Springs located between Lakeview and Perris on a sweeping curve of the Ramona Expressway west of Bernasconi Road.
Little information was available on the other driver of the oncoming vehicle, but reports indicated he was seriously injured and was recovering in a nearby hospital.
The family of Castro has started a gofundme.com page to help pay for funeral expenses for the young woman, and proceeds had reached a little over $3,800 five days after the accident. The goal is $10,000.
Kayla’s many friends, family, and colleagues expressed shock and remorse at her passing with posts on the gofundme.com and Facebook pages. Among those leaving words of condolence and fond memories were:
