This Jeep Grand Cherokee went airborne from an embankment off Soboba Road north of San Jacinto Sunday night, May 13, killing the driver and demolishing the vehicle. Officials identified the deceased driver as Jose Domingo Borja Diaz, 66, of Moreno Valley. Police said Diaz was traveling westbound on Soboba Road near Chabella Road at an estimated 80 m.p.h. when his tire rode up onto the right side dirt embankment. The Jeep then traveled back across both lanes of Soboba Road, hit the embankment on the south side and went airborne for 75 feet before crashing and rolling several times, hitting a tree, and landing on its roof. Diaz was partially ejected and died at the scene. No other vehicles were directly involved, although several incurred damage from flying debris. A number of witnesses saw the crash and tried to administer aid, albeit unsuccessfully.
