Wednesday Night Dances at Hemet West
In July, the following bands will be playing for the popular senior Wednesday Night Dances at Hemet West, 5001 West Florida Avenue in Hemet.
July 4 Dark. No dance.
July 11 Rainbow Cottage.
July 18 Stage Robbers.
July 25 Punch and Judy. Roaring Twenties theme.
The Roaring Twenties were called “roaring” because of the lively, free-wheeling 1920’s, and sometimes was called the Jazz Age. It was a rambunctious time of speakeasies, flappers, fast cars, and jazz music where dancing became popular.
The Wednesday night dances are from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 pm. Admission is six dollars per person, proper attire is required, and alcohol is not allowed. Opportunity drawings offer free tickets. Tables will have snacks, pitchers of water, and freshly brewed tea and coffee is available. For further information about these dances, contact Kathy Perry at 951-692-0891.

Upcoming Chinese cooking classes
On July 10, the third in a series of Chinese cooking classes will be held at the Simpson Center, 305 E. Devonshire Ave. in Hemet. The class will cover how to make egg-drop soup, kung pao chicken, and walnut date wontons. Future classes will include instruction in cooking kung pao chicken, egg drop soup, sweet and sour chicken, tomato beef chow mein, and paper-wrapped chicken.
The first class provided an introduction to Chinese cooking and covered egg rolls, beef with broccoli along with how to properly season a wok. The second class covered potstickers, wonton soup, and stir-fried Mongolian beef on rice. And, for those who are present for the final class, almond cookies will be the final Chinese dish. Student chefs also learn hands-on how to prepare Chinese appetizers, including fried wontons and potstickers. Some Chinese desserts are also included.
Classes are held once a month on Thursdays in the kitchen of the Simpson Center. Space is limited, so it’s best to make a reservation. The cost is $15 per person per session and includes the opportunity to chop, prepare, cook and enjoy the dishes that are taught. Classes run from noon to 2:30 p.m. For more information, contact Mariana Rosen at 951-333-7636 or marianarosen19@gmail.com.
