A Riverside man teaching mathematics at Hemet High School has been arrested for multiple sexual assault charges on Aug. 6.
According to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, Hemet Police Investigators received a tip on Aug. 3 about a math teacher who may have been involved in a previous relationship with a student. A few days later the suspect, 27 year-old Miguel Chavez, was taken into custody after authorities located him in Hemet where he was detained near Florida and Cawston Avenue.
After receiving the tip, investigators looked into the situation and were able to determine the allegations occurred sometime or throughout the 2017 – 2018 school year. Upon further investigation, it is believed there may be other victims and officials are hoping they will come forward to give their testimony.
Chavez is currently being held at Southwest Detention Center where his bail is set at $500,000. According to inmate records on the Riverside County Sheriff website, he is being charged with a misdemeanor of sexual touching, a felony of lewd acts with a child, and another felony of digital penetration with a child.
School officials have expressed their concern and Hemet Unified School District is launching their own personnel investigation at Hemet High along with police.
“We are aware of the Sheriff Department’s investigation and working collaboratively with law enforcement to provide necessary information,” said HUSD Public Information Officer Alexandrea Sponheim. “Because the investigation is concerned with Mr. Chavez, we are trying to gather information of our own.”
Sponheim went on to comment, “We take things like this very seriously and our goal is to provide a safe learning environment for our students, which is why we are conducting our own personnel investigation.”
Anyone with additional information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact local authorities or Investigator Porrazzo at (951) 791-3400.
