A man has died after fleeing from Hemet Police and firing at officers in an officer involved shooting, according to police reports.
On the evening of Sunday, Nov. 11, a Hemet Police officer attempted to conduct an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the 200 block of South Yale Street in Hemet, according to police. Initially, the vehicle didn’t pull over, then finally stopped in the parking lot of an apartment building nearby, officers said. Immediately after stopping, a passenger in the vehicle jumped out and fled on foot, and an officer gave chase.
The male suspect fired a gun at the pursuing officer during the foot pursuit, police said. Eventually, the officer lost sight of the man in the apartment complex. Police then established a perimeter around the complex and began to conduct an extensive search of the structure.
During the search, officers said they learned that the suspect was hiding in the bathroom of an apartment that didn’t belong to him. As they approached the location, the suspect began firing multiple times at officers and the officers returned fire, police reported.
The suspect ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained during the shootout. No Hemet Police officers were injured in the incident, according to the report.
Police continue to investigate this officer-involved shooting, and no further information was released. No names have been released pending notification of the man’s relatives.
