Hemet Unified School District staff got into the holiday spirit this year. Students throughout the district were able to participate in various activities and events for the holiday season. Cawston Elementary turned their library into Whoville; Whittier and Tahquitz students created a parody to famous holiday songs; and Hemet Elementary School students were given new shoes donated by Skechers, DSW, Santa Claus Inc., and Delivering Goods.

HUSD Student Support Services team coordinated with Riverside County Office of Education for this event.

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Hemet Elementary students were able to pick up a new pair of Bob’s Shoes and decorate them outside with their family. The campus was in full holiday spirit as students and their families were able to take pictures with Santa, help themselves to cookies and hot chocolate, and be serenaded by Acacia Middle School’s choir and band.
“We felt honored that Hemet Elementary School was chosen and we are extremely thankful that our students were provided new shoes for the holiday season. To see the joy from students as they grabbed their shoes and began decorating is an action that warmed the hearts of all the adults present. I felt very fortunate to be a part of this event and bring joy to our students and their families,” said Dr. Karen Valdes, Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services.

All around holiday cheer and joy was evident on everyone’s faces. Students enjoyed expressing their creativity as they decorated their Bob’s Shoes that reflected their personality. After decorating their shoes, many students put the shoes they wore to school that day into the bag they were given and wore their newly decorated Bob’s shoes for the rest of the day.
“As I sat reflecting on the day, I realized how symbolic the gesture of providing new shoes to our students really was. We are preparing students for their future so they can go and do amazing things. Their journey is going to take them many great places, and they are going to need shoes to do so. Being able to be that foundation for our students’ future plans is the most rewarding part of my job,” said Director of Student Support Services, Dr. Tracy Piper.
HUSD acknowledge Sketchers, DSW, Santa Claus Inc., and Delivering Goods for the shoes and putting on an event their students surely won’t forget. The district’s Student Support Services team coordinated this effort with Riverside County Office of Education. Nutrition Services provided the hot chocolate bar and cookies, Acacia Middle School band and choir participated, and the Parent Resource Center brought Santa and some elves to pass out small gifts.
