A 1-year-old toddler playing in a San Jacinto driveway was run over and killed last week by a vehicle as the driver backed into the street.
The victim was identified as Anthony Carreon, who suffered multiple serious injuries during the incident, which occurred at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, according to the Riverside County coroner. The child was rushed by ambulance to Hemet Valley Medical Center, but presumably was dead on arrival, since the Riverside County Coroner placed Anthony’s time of death within 15 minutes of his being injured.
Sgt. Brett Johnson of the San Jacinto Police Department said the report came in Monday afternoon as a “vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision.” He said a preliminary investigation revealed that “an adult male” was “backing a vehicle from a residential driveway” and hit the toddler who was “on the ground near the rear of the vehicle.”
Johnson didn’t identify the driver, so it isn’t clear whether this was a family member, friend, or delivery driver, but the officer said the person behind the wheel remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
The family created a Go Fund Me account online, which by press time Wednesday, had raised $1,879 towards a goal of $5,000 for funeral and family expenses. Numerous friends and neighbors reached out online to the child’s relatives when they heard about the family’s tragedy and offered condolences along with money to help them through the devastating setback. Among those who left comments were the following:
