A Beaumont man is in jail on a $1 million bond after being arrested for investigation of second degree murder in the stabbing death of Wilver Aroldo Garcia, a 23-year-old Guatemalan immigrant who lived in Hemet.
Police reported arresting Mark Anthony Acevedo, 22, in connection with the crime, which is still under investigation.
Acevedo was arrested by police early Sunday morning in Beaumont at a location on Sunburst Drive, according to jail records. He is being held at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta where he was booked early Monday.
Hemet Police officers said they and Hemet Fire responded to a call at the 200 block of N. Western Avenue near W. Latham Avenue about 9:20 p.m. Friday night, March 1. The location is a residential area several blocks east of the Hemet Valley Mall.
Garcia was found injured but apparently still breathing and was rushed to Hemet Valley Medical Center where doctors tried to save his life. Fervent efforts to keep Garcia alive did not work, however, and he died later that night. According to the family, Garcia suffered a stab wound to the heart, which may explain why efforts to save him were unsuccessful.
The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay his funeral expenses and for the return of his remains to his native Guatemala, which they said was his dying wish. He was from the municipality of Tiquisate in the department of Escuintla, according to his Facebook page. No contributions had come in by press time toward the goal of $3,000.
Friends and family were bitter about his death calling it the result of a a?hate crime.a? They said Garcia was a hard worker, helped support his family, and held a job with Aquamar seafood production and distribution company headquartered in Rancho Cucamonga.
