Regardless of a varsity team’s season record, a good finish can go a great distance. For the girls basketball team at Tahquitz High, last Friday night was the time and place to do it. With the West Valley Mustangs primed and ready, could the Lady Titans avoid horseshoe prints to the face?
Early signs pointed to ‘Yes’, as the Lady Titans scored the first seven points of the game. Tahquitz dominated the Mustangs throughout the first quarter, taking the score early on to a whopping 21 points vs. the Mustangs’ five.
Both teams encountered some difficulty scoring for much of the second quarter, as Tahquitz scored just eight points, West Valley, five. But more unfortunate was a Mustang injury with 1:05 still in it, as Quinay Ross went down trying to make her fellow Mustangs proud. She got back up, allowing gameplay to continue, but rightfully took a breather after that.
Both teams improved a little in the third quarter as the Lady Mustangs added seven to their tally, but the Titans continued to trend upwards with nine.
The Mustangs gave it what they could in the final quarter, bringing in another eight points. But the Titan girls took the whole enchilada, adding 17 big ones to their board to finish ahead 55-double-nickels, West Valley 25.
Coach Stephan Pace was not immediately available for comment after the game.
It’s worth noting that as Tahquitz celebrated their Seniors’ Night, Lady Titans Siane Bell, Deziah Cooper, Jwane Johnson and Alyssa Shepard found their names plastered on the walls. Looks like we’ll be seeing their names on the programs for graduation commencement.
For right now, the Lady Titans add a 15-7 season to their history book. In the Mountain Pass league, they finished 8-2.
