Hemet-Ryan approved for new weather observation system

he Riverside County Board of Supervisors approved last month the replacement of the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) at Hemet-Ryan Airport. An AWOS is a computerized system that automatically measures one or more weather parameters, analyzes the data, prepares a weather observation consisting of the measured parameters, and broadcasts the observation to pilots near the airport.
It requires replacement because Hemet-Ryan’s current AWOS visibility sensor and its sky and wind condition sensors have failed. The original vendor no longer provides support for the current model so a new one needs to be purchased. The current AWOS has been in use since the early 1990s.
The supervisors voted 4-0 Feb. 7, with one vacant seat, to authorize the expenditure of $115,155 for a sole-source contract with AVCOM Company (Friday Harbor, Washington) for the new weather system. AVCOM Company is the only vendor that will provide and install the AWOS, so it was purchased as a sole-source procurement option rather than through the preferred competitive bid process.
The AWOS frequency for Hemet-Ryan Airport is 118.375 and from the ground is accessible by telephone at (951) 925-6886.
