The Ramona Bowl is presenting Disney’s “High School Musical” for its 8th Summer Youth Theatre, June 26 – 29 at 6 p.m. This is an adaptation of the popular film starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. The Ramona Bowl’s production stars Ethan Trani as basketball star Troy Bolton, and Brooke Loomis as science whiz Gabriela Montez. The show has all the familiar songs and dances from the movie including “We’re All in This Together,” “Getcha Head in the Game,” “Stick to the Status Quo,” and “Bop to the Top.”
The plot centers around Troy and Gabriela, who met over Christmas break, and then reunite at school just as the spring musical is having tryouts. The leads in the musical have always gone to siblings Sharpay and Ryan (played by real siblings Dara and Aedan Bailey). Sharpay decides to make sure that Gabriela can’t make the auditions by scheduling both the basketball final and science decathlon at the same time as auditions.
But Troy and Gabriela’s decision to try out causes a rift in the status quo and other students begin to admit they like things outside their usual clique. Turns out basketball player Zeke (Joseph Trani) likes to bake, brainiac Martha (Danielle Gamez) likes hip-hop and Skater Ripper (Frankki Ondracek) plays the cello.
Basketball player Chad (Daniel Trani) and Brainiac Taylor (Brooke Arellano) want things to stay the same. Kelsi Nielsen (Ellie Ballard), who wrote the spring musical, wants to help Troy and Gabriela. It becomes complicated and confusing but hilariously funny.
More than 50 students ages 5-18 have been rehearsing under the direction of Janet Martin and Paul Fults. Stacey Bailey is producing the show. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ramona Bowl or at the door. Call 951-658-3111 for information.
