What your vehicle color preference says about your personality

A car’s color tends to reflect the personality of the buyer.

We have all heard urban legends regarding a vehicle’s paint color, such as black cars are hot and always look dirty, and red cars get more tickets. Well, maybe you need to wash your car more often, and according to my police officer friend, red cars don’t get more tickets –cars that break the law do.
When I sell a car, I’m always curious why buyers prefer certain colors, I discover sometimes it’s part of their personality or a gut feeling they have. Here are some of the explanations I hear about why people prefer certain colors:

Black – Most folks feel black is the ultimate power color, and puts out a message that says “I’m not easily manipulated; I love elegance and appreciate that which is classic.” Or they like black for its practicality: “I wear a lot of black, the color suits me.” I myself once had a black Jaguar convertible, and my wife currently has a Mercedes C300 – both look great in that color.

White – Those who prefer white vehicles tend to like things clean and pristine, but may be hard to please. One female customer told me, “I generally like things to be very pure and pristine and clear and direct. There’s nothing you can hide under the color white.”

Red – Sensual, dynamic, outgoing are three words that describe those who prefer red cars. They like to be seen and call attention to themselves – except to law enforcement. I had a red Mazda RX7 – it was the perfect color for that car – and I never got a ticket. Those who prefer maroon may have the same traits, but are more subtle.

Blue – Light to medium blue denotes calm and faithfulness; dark blue vehicles exude confidence, credibility and authority. Trust me, my favorite color is blue. Lighter blues are always considered cool to the touch, cool to the eye, unshakable, and faithful – like this car will be your friend forever.

Brown/Beige – It used to be that a brown or beige car meant a no-nonsense down-to-earth person because those colors were most associated with common sense. Back in the ‘80s I sold a lot of Oldsmobiles in these colors to retired folks. However, in the last 15 years, brown has seen a resurgence, and like coffee and chocolate, the color has become more complex. Beige, like brown, is also a no-nonsense color, but it doesn’t have the strength of the darker shade.

Green – Green is the most balanced color in nature, and the deeper the green, the more trustworthy it appears; green also correlates to a sense of tradition. Jaguar green is a great example of that classic color.

Yellow – People who choose yellow cars seem to be more joyful, with a good sense of humor. They know they will be noticed.

Orange – An orange car screams that its owner is artistic, creative and original. I can see my artistic daughter Dannie driving an orange car. Although it’s not my color preference, the new Dodge Challengers look great in this color.

Pearl – Cars with a pearl finish tend to look glamorous, exciting and sophisticated. Not to be mistaken with white, pearl adds bling to your game, giving your car a jewel-like quality and a subtle kind of high-line luxury.

Silver – People who choose silver cars prefer a rather cool, futuristic look – a true metallic. And like precious silver or gold, there is a perception of wealth. This is the kind of personality that appreciates elegance with a bit of flash.

Gold – Warm, intelligent and glamorous are words to describe those who prefer gold cars. Gold is considered the most precious of all metals, and those who fancy gold also love comfort and will pay for it. It’s an attention getter, but a very glamorous one.
