Jasmine Lucia Lopez, a 22-year-old mother, pleaded not guilty Thursday, Aug. 24 to charges of “cruel and inhuman corporal punishment and injury,” to her 4-year-old son.
According to court records, Lopez has also been charged with three counts of inflicting injury on a child, four counts of willful child cruelty, and attempted murder.
The complaint filed against Lopez mentioned using blocks and a wooden back-scratcher against her son, attempts of strangulation, battery and a visible scar on his right thigh. The abuse began in January 2015, according to the complaint.
On Aug. 9, Riverside County Sheriff deputies responded to a possible child abuse call, at the 400 block of Main Street, San Jacinto, where the 4-year-old and his 2-year-old sister were “removed” from the home.
After receiving forensic evidence from the children’s medical exams, Lopez was arrested Aug. 22. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department called the abuse revealed by the exams, “serious and extensive.”
Lopez is currently in custody at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Her bail has been set at $1 million.
