Have you made any resolutions for the New Year? After repeated failure to keep those promises to ourselves, many of us have quit making them. An often cited statistic holds that only 8 percent of people actually keep their New Year’s resolutions.
People commonly resolve to improve their health by eating a better diet, drinking less alcohol, or exercising more. Owners of gyms look forward to January because they are able to sell many new memberships knowing that most people will quit using them within a few months. According to one survey, 80 percent of people who join a gym in January will quit within five months. Gym owners expect only about 18 percent of people who buy memberships to use them consistently.
People don’t stick to their resolutions for many reasons; setting too many of them, pursuing overly ambitious goals, or getting off track by small failures, to name a few. God gives us many second chances. In the Old Testament, God provided his chosen people with many opportunities to turn from disobedience and wickedness and come back to serving and obeying him. After repeated warnings, the southern kingdom of Judah ran out of chances and God allowed the Chaldeans under Nebuchadnezzar to defeat and capture them. The prophet Jeremiah wrote about the heartbreak of this calamity in the book of Lamentations. Yet even in the middle of his and the nation’s despair, he wrote these words of encouragement:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him,’” (Lamentations 3:23-25).
With each new day, God gives us a fresh start. His grace abounds and he remains faithful to his promises. God provides an ultimate “second chance” for you in 2018 – to enter into a loving and intimate relationship with him through his son, Jesus Christ. If you don’t have this kind of relationship with God already, I pray that you will make this your top resolution for this New Year.
