Mt. SJ College baseball team beaten at home by Mt. SAC, 14-8

Rebuilding a baseball field is the easiest part of managing a team at home. But changing the look of your own field, won’t change the opposition who play your team. The Mt. San Jacinto College baseball club has been learning this all season, and the learning experience continued with a visit from the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties, Saturday, Feb. 10.
The Eagles got off to an early lead, picking up 5 runs against the Mounties’ lone first inning run. They even picked up a 6th run in the second inning. But from there, the Mounties gave chase to the Eagles. Mt. SAC picked up three runs in inning three, 2 in the fourth and 4 in the fifth to take over the lead. Both teams scored a pair of runs in the seventh, but while the Eagles struggled to keep up at this point, they didn’t lose face in front of fans. The Mounties took in single runs in each of the last two innings to ensure the Eagles’ capture 14-8.
Head Coach Steve Alonzo says that while his team has improved this season, there’s still more to do. “We’ve had some injuries [this season] and walked too many people [today] and didn’t catch the ball,” Alonzo described. “Those usually are the signs of defeat, when you start making too many mistakes. Especially when you’re playing a good team. They opened the door for us!”
Having said that, Alonzo still believes his 2018 club is a big improvement over 2017. “We have a good club, we just lost some close ball games and…we’re just not winning right now!” He continued.
There is still hope that the Eagles can post bail for this season however, since it’s early right now. The Eagles are back in action this Saturday, as they welcome the Cerritos Falcons to the refreshed Eagle baseball field. MSJC already have a win on their new diamond against the likes of Barstow, so it’s only a matter of time before the Eagles win again. If you can on Saturday, make your way over to MSJC and cheer them on!
