Wednesday, March 14, Rep. Raul Ruiz, M.D. (D-CA) received the 2018 Legislative Action Award from the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC). Ruiz was the only Democrat recognized and one of only four recipients including Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), Sen. Angus King (I-ME), and Rep. Susan Brooks (R-IN). Ruiz represents California’s 36th Congressional District. The award is presented to members of Congress who work to build bipartisan consensus, practice civility, and work to find pragmatic solutions to the challenges facing our nation.
“My life mission is to serve others. As an emergency physician, I am devoted to my patients, and now, as a Congressman, I put people above partisanship and solutions over ideology,” said Ruiz. “Since my first day in Congress, I have made it a top priority to work with anyone who has a good idea, Republican or Democrat, to find pragmatic solutions to the challenges facing my constituents and our nation. I am truly humbled that this problem-solving approach has been recognized by the Bipartisan Policy Center and I look forward to continuing to serve my patients and my constituents through thoughtful, bipartisan solutions.”
Ruiz was presented the award by former Republican National Committee Chairman and BPC Board Member Michael Steele.
“I just wanted to give a shoutout and congratulations to Congressman Ruiz on his award and the work that he’s doing to bring members of both parties together in the House around big issues with the idea to solve problems,” said Steele. “We need more leaders like him who are willing to take risks and to take some of the slings and arrows that you know come with reaching out across the aisle to make a difference for the constituents in his district and his community, but most importantly for the country as a whole.”
“It means a lot to me to be recognized with Dr. Ruiz, a colleague of mine in the Energy and Commerce Committee,” said Brooks. “We work very hard in that committee to try to find bipartisan solutions for the American people whether it has to do with health policy, energy policy, communications policy—we work very hard. It’s an honor to receive this award with him.”
The BPC is a nonprofit organization that combines the best ideas from both parties to promote health, security, and opportunity for all Americans. The BPC drives principled and politically viable policy solutions through the power of rigorous analysis, painstaking negotiation, and aggressive advocacy.
Ruiz was selected for his successful efforts to pass bipartisan legislation to ensure veterans get the benefits they have earned and deserve more quickly and efficiently, protect seniors’ access to Medicare, and help communities impacted by severe wildfires recover, rebuild, and stay safe.
