For high school athletes, the end of the season is here. But even when playoffs are out of the question, for your own sake you still want to try and finish strong. Despite a less-than-stellar season, West Valley’s baseball boys still went in with high spirits as they made their way to Tahquitz High School on Thursday, May 10 to take on last year’s CIF Division 4 champions, the Titans.
But even strong team spirit couldn’t hold off the Titans as the boys in green went to work two-by-two. Second inning saw runs made by Junior Garrett Firth and Senior Koba Kobayashi for Tahquitz, followed by Juniors Kyle Weatherby and Caleb Shepard in the third inning and then another pair in the fifth inning to finish the job.
The Mustangs never scored, giving the day to the Titans.
Coach Ron Savage says his team’s success was a dual effort. “We had [Jahred] Butler throwing today, and he threw really well,” said Savage. “Defense played really well and hit the ball really well.”
Savage also pointed out the resilience of the Mustangs, despite a tough season. “They’re out of the playoffs, but they are still playing to win a game. They’re still showing up to play the game, and that’s all we can ask.”
The Titans met up again with the Mustangs on Friday, May 11 to make up for a previous rainout; The Titans won that one too, 2-1. With these last two games, the Mustangs finish the 2018 season with a total of 4-10-1 in the Mountain Pass League, 5-19-1 overall. The Titans now advance to the playoffs as the number two seed in CIF Division 2 and are 11-4 and 17-9 to date.
Elsewhere in baseball: The Hemet Bulldogs are chasing success with a record of 13-2 in league and 19-8-1 total so far. San Jacinto’s results on the other hand are more mixed; their league numbers are 6-8-1 and overall 14-11-2.
Based on those figures, Hemet and Tahquitz are genuinely the ones to watch! We will work to bring you postseason results as they become available.
