Starting in mid-July the Trinity Lutheran Church Arts Exploratorium Committee plans for a 5-day arts exploratorium for incoming pre-K through 6th grade Hemet-area students. The focus will be on the arts of music, painting, fabric crafts, and acting fundamentals. Joni Pikard, Arts Exploratorium Committee member, said that in addition to fun activities, the event will include healthy snacks for the kids.
According to the arts exploratorium planner, Charlie Larson, the committee has been meeting since March 2018 to prepare for this event. “We are ahead of where we thought we would be,” Larson announced, “We already have eight students who turned in applications.” The committee’s goal is to have 50 students. “This is the first year we’ve done this, so we want to keep it small,” Larson said. Pikard said the committee plans to have kids from Valley Restart attend, as well as students from area elementary schools.
Larson said June 29 is the deadline for students to apply and pay the fee. It costs $20 for one child or $30 for two. “There are also scholarships available,” Larson said. Larson commented that the event is mostly funded by a $900 grant from the Pacifica Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA) and a $1,000 contribution from the Trinity Mission Support Committee of Trinity Lutheran Church.
“The event will bring the community together,” Pikard said. “It will give the kids something fun to do, and at the same time give parents some free time.” According to a Jan. 22, 2013 Washington Post article entitled, “Top 10 Skills Children Learn From The Arts,” written by Valerie Strauss, children can learn a lot from the arts – creativity, confidence, and problem solving.
Larson said the committee is asking for volunteers to help the week of the event. “We will have two volunteers in each class, which is the state requirement,” Larson said, “And we will have background checks for all of the volunteers.”
The arts exploratorium will take place from July 16 – 20 during the hours of 1 -5 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 191 South Columbia St. in Hemet. Larson said applications for enrollment and scholarships can be obtained by calling the church office at 951-658-5013. Pikard said teachers or church members who want to volunteer can also call the church office. “We are also accepting monetary donations to help with scholarships,” Pikard said, “And we are hoping to get help to pick kids up at Valley Restart.”
