LETTER TO THE EDITOR – July 12th, 2018

Dear Editor,

This is in response to your “Editor’s Note” on July 5.
I did not agree with your interpretation of Nancy Eller and Citizen Bob’s letters.
I believe, as they do, that anyone coming to this wonderful country, for whatever reason, must do so LEGALLY.
Once in our country they should learn English, become productive members of our society, obey our laws and embrace our ways and customs. Too often they want to bring their laws and lifestyle with them even if it conflicts with our laws.
I don’t understand when or why “ILLEGAL” became okay and concerned citizens like Nancy Eller, Citizen Bob, and myself became “Hate-Mongers.” We are law abiding citizens and all we’re asking is that anyone wanting to live in America do the same – respect our laws and our flag.

God Bless America!
Aurora Hernandez

Editor’s Note:

We agree our borders should be controlled, and the immigration laws passed by Congress enforced (if only Congress would pass an up-to-date immigration bill!) What we object to are the attitudes of self-satisfied Americans – whose ancestors probably arrived here poor – reveling in contempt for those trying to escape hunger, poverty, and oppression in their home countries. It’s partly such hateful attitudes, we believe, that have led to the offensive policy of en masse separation of children from their immigrant parents.

Dear Editor,

Shame on you! Printing an unsigned Letter to the Editor as you did in last week’s Opinion column is failed journalism. It is blatant propaganda. While I agree with the message in the Editor’s Note, that does not excuse the printing of a “full name withheld by request.” That truly is “Fake News.” Please don’t print comments from cowards.

R. Allan Schley

Editor’s Note:

Thank you Mr. Schley. Our policy is to authenticate every person who submits, but we consider each case if they want to remain anonymous. Unfortunately, many people are afraid of retribution for expressing their opinion.
