Stop signs to help aging bridge

■ Chronicle News Staff

Hemet has installed stop signs and flashing red beacons at the Stetson Bridge crossing of the Hemet Channel located south of the Hemet Ryan Airport and east of Walden Weaver Drive.
Although not at an intersection, the stop signs will help slow traffic to relieve pressure on the wood-beamed bridge built in 1940.
The city’s Engineering Department is securing grant funds to rebuild the aging bridge, and once construction starts, Stetson Avenue at the bridge will be temporarily closed with detours posted. Meanwhile, bridge weight restrictions remain in effect and will be enforced by police.
The city appreciates the public’s cooperation and hopes to have a new bridge built soon. Meanwhile, drivers are urged to please stop at the signs and observe the strict posted weight limits. Questions may be forwarded to the Hemet Engineering Department, 951-765.2360.
