The Historic Hemet Theatre began Season Three of the Tribute Mania Concert Series on Saturday Sept 8, celebrating the reveal of new lobby decor and staff uniforms. The new lobby decor was designed by Steve Covington (owner of Downtown Deli and Covington Design) and is a restoration of the lobby from the 1930s and 40s, while retaining the expanded layout from the 1960s. The architect for the project is Jerome Scott. Richard Maddock did the drywall and plaster work and Tim Owen Custom Painting did the majority of the lobby painting, with Steve providing finishing touches. Tuxedo-style vests for the staff were designed by Sherry Kidby.
Additional decor changes will take place in the next couple of months, including new carpet from New Horizons Carpets, custom chandeliers by Joell Ortiz, and two hand-painted murals by local artists from the Hemet Valley Art Association. Home Depot will help with refrigeration equipment for the concession area.
The lobby is the first phase in a project that will renovate all areas of the facility, culminating in a 100th Birthday Celebration in 2021. Funds for the renovation are being raised through grants, raffles and a special fundraising campaign. In total, the Century Club campaign is expected to raise over a million dollars in the next four years.
Meanwhile, Fools Logic was in town performing their high-energy tribute to Supertramp. The house was almost full, but the enthusiasm of the crowd was evident as they clapped, cheered and whistled their appreciation with every classic hit. The audience included many new patrons, each falling under the spell of Hemet’s charming old movie house.
