Bicyclist Injured in Collision

According to a Hemet Police Department press release, on Monday, September 17th, 2018, at about 6:40 AM, Hemet Police Officers were called to the scene of an injury traffic collision involving a bicycle and a sport utility vehicle which occurred on Florida Ave. near Palm Ave., in Hemet. Investigation revealed the bicyclist, a 65 year old resident of the county area of Hemet, was riding his bicycle east on Florida Avenue near the south curb. A 20 year old resident of the county area of Hemet, was traveling east on Florida Avenue in the east bound #2 lane in a Nissan SUV. Preliminary investigation shows that as the SUV was about to pass the bicyclist, the bicyclist may have suddenly turned left and entered the middle of the traffic lane where he was struck by the vehicle. The bicyclist was transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment and he is currently in the Intensive Care Unit. The driver of the SUV was not injured, and remained on scene where she cooperated with officers. At this time, DUI is not suspected. Florida Avenue was closed to east bound traffic at Palm Avenue for approximately two hours while officers investigated the incident.
