■ Hemet Fire Department / Contributed

Assistance League of Hemacinto (Hemet and San Jacinto) is an all-volunteer nonprofit
organization that develops and implements community based philanthropic programs to
benefit the children of the valley. Besides the Operation School Bell Program, where
the organization provides new clothes and shoes for school-aged children, it’s also dedicated to improving literacy in children. As an official chapter of the National Assistance League, they are participating in a national program for literacy.
Named “Action Week,” the organization will be celebrating the event from Feb. 25 through Mar. 1 by collecting as many books as possible for students in grades K-8 in the valley.
ALH kicked off their campaign with a special event at the Hemet Library on
Wednesday, Jan. 30. “Hands Around the Library” invited as many children and parents as possible from neighboring schools to join the fun. The Assistance League, library staff, Fire Chief Scott Brown, Hemet Fire Department, Hemet Police Department, City Council, teachers, friends and neighbors joined “Hands Around the Library” to show Hemet and San Jacinto how important reading and teamwork is to the community.
Starting Feb. 1, book collection drops will be at fire stations, both city halls, and
many businesses and restaurants throughout the valley. ALH encourages the public to help reach a goal of 1,000 new books to be distributed to students grades K-8 in the valley. You can put a book directly in the hands of a student grade K-8.
