Riverside County Probation Officer Receives Statewide Award for Leading Youth Educational Initiatives

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA – The Riverside County Probation Department is proud to announce that Senior Probation Corrections Officer Juan Damian has been honored with the 2020 Award of Excellence from the Chief Probation Officers of California (CPOC). The statewide award is given annually to a probation employee who has made significant contributions to the probation profession.

“Juan has done incredible work shaping the lives of the young people in his care in his 20 years at Indio Juvenile Hall,” Chief Probation Officer Ron Miller II said. His expertise in the probation field and his dedication are unparalleled. He is well deserving of this honor.”

Juan was recognized for his unwavering levels of dedication and commitment to the youth he has sworn to serve at Indio Juvenile Hall. His focus on positive youth development led to a new graduate program in partnership with Riverside Community College District and College of the Desert; the seven-week program provides youth an introduction to college, develops soft skills and fosters career development.

He is also coordinating innovative career education video access for those youth who are interested in certificate programs to gain entry-level employment upon release. Spearheading this program in and of itself is something to be proud of; however, what truly stands out is the heart and compassion that Juan puts forth as he works with the youth. One student stated, “The graduate program has helped me realize all the mistakes I’ve done should not stop me from chasing my true dreams. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my education.”

“I am humbled and uplifted by this recognition,” Juan said. “Words cannot do justice to my gratitude and appreciation. I would like to thank the entire team at Indio Juvenile Hall for working with me to implement these programs.”

CPOC is a leadership association composed of Probation Department Chiefs from all 58 counties with a shared identity as law enforcement leaders who are committed to a research-based approach to public safety that promotes positive behavior change.
