Clergy Corner: Especially on Mother’s Day, ‘thou excellest them all’
Pastor Jason Pruitt, Parkway Baptist Church.[/caption] ■ By Jason Pruitt / Contributed As I read my Bible through, I find a smile forming on my face whenever I come to Proverbs 31, which is often referred to as the passage of the “Proverbs 31 Woman.” If you read verses 10-30, we find a description about a very strong, godly lady. In verse 10, the Bible says that a virtuous woman is worth more than rubies. In verse 11, the Bible talks about her husband trusting her completely. In verse 13, the Bible mentions her incredible work ethic and skill. In verse 15, it mentions how she is up first in the home. In verse 18, she is the last to go to bed. The verses continue on to mention her strength, honor, preparation, sacrifice and fear of the Lord. Understandably, this is an incredibly godly woman. Honestly, that doesn’t begin to do justice to how incredible she is from what we read in Proverbs 31: 10-30. She is much more valuable than can ever be understood. How so? Verses 28 and 29 say, “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.” I think those two verses best sum up the Proverbs 31 Woman. She is loved and adored by her children and she is praised by her husband – the members of her family that value her. She is a fascinating and important individual.
This Mother’s Day, I pray we all stop to acknowledge the people in our lives who do so much.Personally, I have written my wife’s name, in all capital letters, at the end of verse 30. my wife’s name. I did that when we were engaged because I knew she was this amazing woman who had so much potential in life. I saw greatness in her from the beginning of our relationship. After five years of marriage, two kids and lots of learning experiences, she does “excellest them all.” I have an incredible wife to journey this life with as a husband. Proverbs 31: 23 says, “Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.” I am somebody because my wife is this marvelous person who is my support, my sounding board to ideas and the best mother I have ever seen. This Mother’s Day, I pray we all stop to acknowledge the people in our lives who do so much. It seems unfair to just give one day to mothers, yet I am glad there is at least one day dedicated to these incredible ladies. Happy Mother’s Day to my wonderful wife! Happy Mother’s Day to my awesome Mom! Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers out there. May your “children rise up, and call” you blessed.
