Court rules CHP officer wrongfully arrested Hemet pastors in 2011
Photo source: www.theblaze.comCourt ruled that the arrest was unlawful.[/caption] ■ By Kyle Selby / Reporter A lawsuit filed against California Highway Patrol Officer Darren Meyer in 2011 after an unlawful Hemet DMV arrest video of two pastors went viral –– airing on Fox –– reopened on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Court ruled that the arrest was unlawful and appeals judges said in a memorandum that Meyer didn’t have probable cause to make the arrest. Meyer arrested former pastors Mark Mackey and Brett Coronado in 2011 on misdemeanor criminal charges for preaching loudly outside the Hemet DMV in the 1200 block of S. State Street without a permit. The charges were eventually dropped. The day that Mackey and Coronado were arrested was at least the fourth time in 15 months that CHP officers had been called to demonstrations at the Hemet Department of Motor Vehicles, according to court documents. Mackey was represented in the lawsuit by Advocates for Faith and Freedom, a Murrieta-based nonprofit law firm.
