MSJC Women’s Basketball easily beat College of the Desert, 93 - 20

That’s what happened after the Lady Roadrunners basketball team from College of the Desert flew to our side of the hill to take on Mt. San Jacinto College on Wednesday, Jan. 24. The two flocks stayed neck-and-neck during the first minutes of the first period. But then the Eagles soared ahead and put a span of 15 points between themselves and the roadrunners. With a score of 21-6 to start period two, COD had a job to do. On top of this, their own Jada Toland took a sprain just 32 seconds in, complicating their recovery effort. But regardless of who was in or out, it was clear whose heads were in the game; the Lady Eagles were up 48-12 at halftime. Even a little bird feed time wasn’t enough for COD to gain further traction in period three. The Eagle barrage continued to take the “meep-meep” out of the Roadrunners, as MSJC scored a further 26 points over COD’s six. Up to this point, COD head coach Skip Parry had used three of his team’s five timeouts, whereas MSJC coach Chris Mozga had only used one. In the first two minutes of the final period, Parry used the last two in an effort to light the fire under his ladies’ talons. But in their approach, another Roadrunner sprained a talon, Brandie Lopez. At this point however, the Roadrunners were grounded. The Eagles took this game 93-20. The top scorers for this MSJC game were Britney Thomas with 25 points, an astounding 17 rebounds and 3 assists. Thomas also blocked a pair of shots. Delacy Brown scored 19 points and 6 assists, followed by Kaila Gower with 11 points. With playoffs coming up, Coach Chris Mozga knows which bolts need some tightening up. “We didn’t shoot it very well at the start of the game, but luckily tonight, our defense and our rebounding was able to get us separation and finally we started making some shots in the second half,” explained Mozga. “Overall, we’ll take it.” Mozga would also like to thank Kiana Castello for pushing to get in a good twelve minutes, because he needed another good player in rotation. With this game, MSJC has a record of 22-1 on the season and 3-0 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North games, and is number one in SoCal, number two in the State. COD has 2-15 overall and 0-2 in conference. Only five games remain before playoffs. The Lady Eagles head to San Marcos tomorrow evening to take on the Palomar Comets at 7:00 p.m. Could be a good first stop for date night!
