Free paint drop-off event open to the public PaintCare is hosting the event on Saturday, May 19 from 8 a.m.-noon at the City of Hemet Corporation Yard, 3777 Industrial Ave., Hemet. PaintCare is a nonprofit organization established by paint manufacturers to provide convenient places to recycle leftover paint. Containers must have original labels; house paint and primers (latex or oil-based); stains; deck and concrete sealers; and clear finishes (e.g., varnishes and shellac). For details on what products are accepted (and not accepted), visit https://www.paintcare.org/hemet. Reservations are not required but selecting an arrival time helps plan accordingly. Jac Jacaruso to Perform at The Diamond Valley Arts Center Guitarist and vocalist, Jac Jacaruso, is excited to return to the stage at The Diamond Valley Arts Center (DVAC), 123 N. Harvard St., Hemet. He will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. Doors open about 6:30 p.m. Jacaruso is a gifted musician who got his start in New York City where he honed his skills as an R&B singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He played in NYC clubs and studios at first, then he played with Desmond Child and with Billy Joel’s band. His talent and passion for music led to starting his own band. Jacaruso soon fell in love with jazz music, so his most recent work as a solo artist features both blues and jazz. He performs a fresh interpretation of tunes made popular by such artists as Peter Gabriel, John Mayer, Hall & Oates, Paul Simon, and Sting. Jacaruso is a unique member of a musical family. His father played the violin and the accordion. Jac’s son, Luca Jacaruso, is a highly talented jazz pianist and composer who is studying jazz in Graz, Austria. General admission is $20. DVAC members $15. Students $10 at the door. All tickets are available at www.thedvac.org or by stopping by The DVAC Wednesdays through Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is free to park on Harvard Street and in the Hemet city lot. Wine and other beverages will be available for purchase.
“A Feast of Song, Taste and Enjoy!” The Harmoneers Chorale present their 2018 spring concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 20 in the auditorium of The First Presbyterian Church, 515 E. Kimball Ave., Hemet. Cost is $10 per person. Directed by Mary Ellen Van Ostenbridge, accompanied by Charity Putnam on the piano, and by the computerized orchestra creations of Ron Van Ostenbridge, The Harmoneers Chorale has been thrilling audiences in the Hemet area since 1977. Scholarship presentations will be offered to graduating high school seniors who plan to have a career in vocal music. The Harmoneers Chorale has given over $40,000 in scholarship assistance.
Chairs for Charity fundraiser Tickets are still available for the inaugural “Chairs for Charity” live auction starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 in Nelson Hall on the Idyllwild Arts Academy Campus, 52500 Temecula Rd., Idyllwild. Led by Michael Slocum, president of the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation, this one-night-only live auction is part of the bigger 50th anniversary celebration. Tickets for the May 26 festivities are only $45 each and include dinner, beverages, music, silent auction, and live auction. Dinner will be catered by Carte Blanche Gourmet Tacos with music provided by DJ Billy Sheppard. The live auction will feature four of the 15 custom created chairs. There will also be a silent auction that will feature art, event tickets, wine baskets, autographed posters, and much more. Attendees may continue to bid online for all other available chairs. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the scholarship funds for the Idyllwild Arts Academy and summer program. Event tickets may be purchased in Idyllwild at The Town Crier, Middle Ridge Winery Tasting Gallery, or online at www.associatesofiaf.org/chairsforcharity. Checks may be mailed to P.O. Memorial Day Heritage Picnic Picnic will be held from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on May 28 at the Simpson Center, 305 E. Devonshire, Ave. Hemet. It will be time again to recognize our honorary co-chairpersons and bestow the Heritage Award to a deserving recipient(s). And, of course, there will be the popular awarding of “Farmers Fair” ribbons for the oldest, newest and furthest traveled attendees. If you don’t bring a picnic basket, you can purchase a sandwich selection of your choice for only $5. There is an opportunity to cruise and muse past local organization tables where representatives will be promoting their respective historical displays and related material to view or purchase. And you can always sign up as member of the Hemet Museum, dba Hemet Heritage Foundation.
Two Salvation Army summer camps for youth The Hemet Salvation Army is hosting its annual summer camps both in town and in the mountains beginning Friday, June 18. In town, children from 1st thru 8th grades can go on local field trips, engage in activities and complete projects, and have lunch and snacks with lots of fun at the Salvation Army Hemet Community Center, 340 S. Palm Ave., Hemet. The youth camp runs from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday - Thursday, June 18 - July 26. The cost is $35 per week ($160 value thanks to sponsors). In the mountains, children ages 5-17 can attend the Salvation Pine Summit Summer Camp near Big Bear during weekly sessions between June 18 – July 23. Rock climbing, nature walks, archery, swimming, and more are available. The cost is $380 per week per youth. Hemet Senior Computer Club The club meets the third Monday of every month from 10 a.m.–noon at Valley-Wide Valle Vista Recreation Center. The club is open to anyone in the Hemet/San Jacinto area who would like to learn and share knowledge of computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. Valley-Wide Recreation Center, 43935 E.
