San Jacinto College Student Misahel Hernandez completed a mural this week at the San Jacinto Campus Veterans Resource Center to honor the transition a person makes from serving in the military to becoming a student and re-entering civilian life. Hernandez, a former Marine, worked with MSJC staff and fellow veteran students to complete the mural. “It started from my background as a veteran…and I wanted to portray that in the mural here” said Hernandez, of Hemet. The new mural portrays military servicemen and women and the families who support them. The mural features silhouette-like images of a memorial site, a soldier saluting, of three soldiers’ families reuniting, and the MSJC Eagle. Hernandez says he started working at the Veterans Resource Center last semester when he realized he wanted to make a contribution to the VRC. The muralist says he wanted to depict something that captured the majority of veterans, their dependents, and even students as a whole at MSJC. The coordinator of the VRC, Martina Moncada, says she fell in love with the site immediately and everything it represented. Moncada goes on to describe the mural saying, “It represented military students, it represented those who we serve at MSJC, it represented those who have served our country and sacrifice.” See the full video interview at: https://youtu.be/Tl7z5cO1SYg [caption id="attachment_11312" align="aligncenter" width="576"] The completed mural on the wall of MSJC Veterans Resource Center - San Jacinto Campus.[/caption]
