Women’s Conference: Be a sponsor! The 8th Annual San Jacinto Valley Women’s Conference will be held Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Soboba Country Club. While the conference is sold out, there still are sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and organizations. The conference has raised over $30,000 in scholarships over the past 7 years. Classical pianist to perform in Idyllwild World-renowned pianist Caroline Oltmanns will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the William M. Lowman Concert Hall on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, Idyllwild. The concert is free and open to the public, but space is limited. The chair of the Youngstown Ohio State University Music Department, Oltmanns, who holds a doctorate in music, will perform piano works from her CD, Ghosts, which features compositions by Chopin, Brahms, and Schumann, among others. Described by critics as “light and scintillating,” Oltmanns’ playing has been called “filled with fantasy in the greatest sense of the word.” For more information, visit www.idyllwildarts.org
Water-wise landscape design workshops UC Master Gardeners of Riverside County in partnership with Valley Beautiful will present three workshops on water-wise landscape design at the Hemet Public Library conference room on Saturdays, March 16 & 30, from 10 a.m.-12 noon, and Saturday, April 20, from 9-11 a.m. Topics will include the following: Climate zones; understanding characteristics of your property; water and drought; soil preparation; creating a site design; water-wise plant selection; irrigation; installation; and class project. Senior Wednesday Night Dances at Hemet West A highlight of the Senior Wednesday Night Dances at Hemet West is the various themes, while the attractive clubhouse is decorated accordingly. Dancers enjoy dressing according to the themes. There are excellent different dance bands each Wednesday. The ceiling lights dim, replaced by atmospheric multi-colored sparkling lights, and the fun-filled evening of dancing begins. March 6–Rhonda and Showdown (Mardi Gras theme) March 13–Rainbow Cottage. (St. Patrick’s Day theme) March 20–American Made. March 27–Stage Robbers. The dances are open to the public and run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $6 each, proper attire is required (no work jeans, tank tops, or shorts), and alcohol is not allowed. Opportunity drawings offer free tickets. Tables have snacks, and pitchers of water; and freshly brewed tea and coffee is available. Location: Hemet West, 5001 W. Myths & Mythology The Mt. San Jacinto College Anthropology Department and the Western Science Center will sponsor a spring lecture series, “Myths & Mythology,” at 7 p.m. on the below dates at the Western Science Center in Hemet. The lectures will feature college faculty speaking about topics within their academic disciplines. “Myths & Mythology” will look into the different ways in which mythological concepts affect and are affected by society: Mar. 7: History Professor Morgan Hoodenpyle will discuss “Film Mythology” April 4: History Instructor Christina Yamanaka will focus on “From Early Origins to the Rise of the Modern State: The Role of Shinto in Japanese Society.” May 2: Anthropology Professor John Torres will lecture about “The Navajo Hero Twins: Fighting Monsters Then and Now.” Cost is $5 for students with ID, $8 for general public, and free for Western Science Center members. MSJC Community Orchestra schedule Sunday, Mar. 3 at 3 p.m.–First Spring Concert: Boieldieu harp concerto with the MSJC Orchestra featuring harpist Dr. Vanessa Sheldon. Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m.–Second Spring Concert will feature the 150th anniversary of the Grieg Piano Concerto with piano soloist Daniel del Pino, born in Lebanon and visiting from Spain. The concert also will premier original compositions by MSJC music majors. For performances at the San Jacinto Campus, call 951-487-3790 for reservations. Hemet Senior Computer Club The club meets the third Monday of every month from 10 a.m.–noon at Valley-Wide Valle Vista Recreation Center.
