Hemet Police Department Awarded $80,000 Grant From the Office of Traffic Safety

Hemet, Calif. – The Hemet Police Depart_x0002_ment will roll out a police traffic services program to deter dangerous and illegal driving behaviors that increase the risk of crashes in the communi_x0002_ty.

“Impairment, speed_x0002_ing and other dangerous driving behaviors jeop_x0002_ardize the safety of oth_x0002_er people on the road,” Hemet Police, Sergeant Dan Reinbolt said. “This funding allows us to provide necessary traffic enforcement measures with the goal of reducing serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads,” The grant will pay for additional enforcement measures, including:

• Enforcement opera_x0002_tions focused on suspect_x0002_ed distracted drivers in violation of California’s hands-free cell phone law.

• Bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement oper_x0002_ations focused on driver behaviors that put vul_x0002_nerable road users at risk.

• Enforcement operations focused on top violations that cause crashes: speed_x0002_ing, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.

• Community education presentations on traffic safety issues such as dis_x0002_tracted driving, DUI, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.

• Officer training and/ or recertification: Stan_x0002_dard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Road_x0002_side Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

The grant program will run through September 2022. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Cal_x0002_ifornia Office of Traffic Safety, through the Na_x0002_tional Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
